Sexual Problems and Related Issues
Being able to engage in and enjoy satisfying sexual relations is a goal most adults wish to fulfil. Fortunately, for most, they will be able to meet partners who will match their sexual expectations. Occasionally, sometimes after many years together, the sexual dimension in a loving relationship will falter. Loss of potency or sexual desire, a reduced libido or interest in the physical side of a relationship can result in much distress and mental misery for the affected partner. Young people can be subject to much pressure to attain sexual experience and techniques beyond their years. Youth culture and peer pressure are powerful coercions to conform to notional standards of expectation. The consequences can all too often be sexual problems which magnify into serious issues affecting the psychological stability, identity and self-esteem of the individual - boy or girl - concerned.
Stressful novel environments, such as University, can impact a young person with far greater negative social results than people often imagine. So, taken together, these circumstances, sometimes along with physical illness or impediment, socialisation or early abuse, conspire to create the fertile ground for developing psycho-sexual disorders which - if left unattended to - can become major problem areas in time. Various syndromes become apparent:- Premature
ejaculation or erectile insufficiency in males, Vaginismus or painful
intercourse in females. Psychological traits develop;- low sex-drive and
voyeuristic tendencies with pornography; fetishism,
exhibitionism, excess body-art or
mutilations. Sometimes gambling or drug related addictions have a sexual
undertone that precedes them.
If addressed honestly and openly early, a good many of these disturbing issues can be dealt with effectively using established psychological approaches such as 'Sensate-Focus' therapy (Masters & Johnson) Hypnotherapy or Cognitive / Behavioural Therapy (Beck). The results are usually extremely pleasing for all involved!
